The Chickens

We keep both large birds and bantams. The bantams, including frizzles and silkies, are for eggs (small) and decoration. Silkies are renowned for the frequency of their broodiness. Here is one of our hens with her lone Orpington chick she hatched on the sly. However, we find the bantam hens can only realistically manage to sit on half a dozen of the big Orpington eggs. So, we use the larger hens for hatching chicks, and bantams who bring home chicks are the ones who have sneaked away and sat on hidden clutches.
